EMOTIVITÁ CONTRO VOLONTÁ: COSA GUIDA IL NOSTRO SPIRITO - EMOTION VS WILL: WHAT DRIVES OUR SPIRIT

All’opposto, é orribile.

No. Non senza Dio e il Suo spirito.

EMOTION VS WILL: WHAT DRIVES OUR SPIRIT

I come from theater, my training is first of all theatrical, so words like "feeling", "emotion" and many others, have been my daily bread for many years.

I fully understand the decisive role of emotions in the human soul, and not only because I have studied and analyzed them, but because I was the first to rediscover myself over the years as an extremely emotional person - who perhaps does not necessarily show what she feels, because sometimes so deep that she has a hard time expressing it immediately - but still extremely affected by it.

And yet, over the years, I have realized how, in the spiritual life, this type of approach not only does not help, but is absolutely and certainly an obstacle to what is instead the most important characteristic of our soul: the will.

In the very complicated world of 2022, in which "do what you feel" is the cardinal mantra that is proposed as the utmost wisdom, it is not easy to speak of spiritual life, nor of will as the North of life and choices, small and large, of life itself. Yet, if we do not understand this central point of our inner life, we risk collecting mistakes, wrong choices, suffering and consequences of suffering that we could instead avoid, because God has given us a very powerful tool that is not only capable of guiding us with the strength of an elephant, but which also makes us extremely similar to our creator: the will.

It is a very important step in the spiritual growth and faith of everyone, and if we do not do it, it seems to me that our faith will never become adult, never solid and true.

The main problem is that we live in an emotional world. We are completely and irremediably surrounded and immersed in the emotional-psychological world, we live on emotions: the web series we watch on TV, artfully made so that they can kidnap us in some immediate and easy emotions: adrenaline, pleasure, sometimes anger and violence. Never as in this historical time, the media industry has developed in themes and a type of writing that can arouse basic instincts, sometimes even low, very low. You don't think anymore, you just feel.

And then social media, the emotion industry par excellence: the "reactions", so called, are the clearest example of this. But also the dating apps, a comment, a heart, an angry face, two short words: it is the factory of emotions. And this is why a true dialogue is often not possible on social networks: because it is a vomiting of emotions on each other, rather than the sharing of deep thoughts and values.

The key word is: surface, it is a matter of surface.

The problem with emotions is not that they are wrong or necessarily misleading - far be it from me to say this, there are obviously some big truths behind emotions - but it is that they impact the person on a too superficial level to be considered the North we use to make the most important decisions of our life. What we should ask ourselves is instead: what drives us? What are we the things we are guided by? How does the human being work? What is it at the bottom of the human person?

An emotional person is a boat in the middle of the sea: whatever moves it, for better or for worse, whatever moves it back and forth, violently shakes its sails. An emotional person who does not make his North of emotionality, it is like a sailboat that when the storm arrives, turns into a submarine, shields its skin with thick layers of steel, and goes down, where the waters are always calm. It returns to the abyss, to the depths of everything, to what never changes, patiently, observing the storm from afar but without being overwhelmed by it, and there it waits for the storm to pass, before returing to the surface.

We are often slaves of emotions, instead: anxiety, fear, doubt - or even good emotions - attraction, pleasure, satisfaction, gratification. All of these are important signs of something, but they cannot be used to guide our choices, at least not if we really want to find out what God's plan is for us - a plan that sometimes involves also going through the most unpleasant emotions - to make it happen. A person of faith must seek his North elsewhere. Where is it? In the will.

All Saints and great mystics have made it their North. Just as they knew better than anyone that whatever they were able to do would not depend on them, but on the Spirit acting, they also knew that without their will that same spirit could not even begin to act. The Spirit announces himself only if invited, and God respects our closed doors with immense sorrow but great love. What moves the spirit is our will.

We are used to exercise our will in some things in life: in study, in a sport, in a job, in learning something important to us; for some reason we are willing to make sacrifices for everything that concerns the concrete and material life, but when that same will touches the spirit, we become weak and rebellious, like children who do not want to bathe. And why? Because we want to "feel good" again. We go back to feeling. Engaging in studying or working is actually a way to feel gratified, appreciated and praised. It is a way to feel good. On the other hand, when the will asks us to accept a cross, to accept pain, to forgive, to live with wounds, to love beyond, we are unable to do so, because we don't see the meaning of it, and because, far from being gratified, we feel stupid, losers, victims, judged, pitied. And nobody likes being in these places - "it doesn't feel good".

The desire to be accepted, the desire to please, the fear of judgment: all these characteristics are typical of the human soul, but in the emotional world in which we live, they have been sharpened, they have been brought to the highest levels, making us forget the most important thing, in the spiritual life, that is: who am I, really, what do I want, and to whom do I ultimately want to like?

Jesus has given us proof several times in the Gospel of how emotionality is a totally human characteristic, yet surmountable in the will: Gethsemane is the clearest example of this. Before the test, what do we use? Emotion or will? "It doesn't feel good" is one of the phrases I hear most often, talking to the most diverse people, especially in the USA. It is incredible how "feeling" has become so important in life that it has found a central space, even in the language. If "it doesn't feel good", something is supposed to be wrong, and we tend not to do it and not to choose it.

I wonder: in Gethsemane, did it "feel good" the idea of being tortured, stoned, and killed on the Cross, for Jesus? Does the Cross “feel good”, whatever it is in life? The answer to this is obvious, and in the Gospel it is underlined by the very powerful phrase: "Jesus sweated tears of blood". It is clear that the inner struggle with ourselves, when on the one hand there is a powerful emotionality that pushes you to escape from certain situations, and on the other hand a will that tries to accept pain, is very hard. Yet, it is that will that leads us to the Resurrection, it is that will that generates life.

The opposite of Jesus' behavior is Peter, who lets himself be overcome by emotion - fears, terror, confusion - and runs away. The renewed and converted Peter, on whom the Holy Spirit will descend about 50 days after that experience of fall, will be a Peter ready to die the very death of Jesus, with a very strong and fiery will.

Does it “feel good” to stay close to your husband or wife if you are betrayed? Does it feel good to be humiliated, slandered, laughed at, knowing you are right but experiencing persecution? "Does it feel good" to endure an illness, one's own or that of someone you love, every day after the next?

No. It is hell, and hell is not beautiful. On the contrary, it is horrible. The cross is horrible, and to stay under it, even when it seems that its weight is unbearable, we desperately need to rediscover, within us, the strength of the will. Because the fruits of that will offered and used are the sweetest fruits of the Resurrection, unparalleled fruits, miraculous fruits. The fruit of the will on the cross is holiness, full joy, the love that challenges and overcomes death.

So, the question returns: Who am I? Who do I want to be? What I feel is horrible, but do I want to go through it and overcome it, in order to be victorious in love in the end? Do I want to be that person who walk through the cross and overcomes death?

Emotionality, however, does not necessarily express itself only in ugliness and pain in the human being. Emotion is also imagination, for better or for worse.

I was talking to a friend the other day; she had to undergo routine exams - without there being any real danger of anything - but from the day before she was already getting anxious about "what if they find something?" But she is not certainly the only one, we are all like this, bombarded with imaginary messages and photos, and with relationships that never make us think we are safe, immersed in things that exist today and tomorrow who knows, 'cause: "and if I don't I love you anymore? ”,“ and if I then discover that I have an illness ”,“ and if I then loose my job? ”,“ and if then… ”We are boats in the midst of the storm.

Slaves of feeling and of an imagination that detaches us from the reality of the "here" and "now", we have reduced the human adventure to a mere "feeling", without realizing that there are abysses, waiting for us, but that we will never see, because we have lost the ability to reach them. We are unable to live productively in the present, to love "now and here", without worrying about what it will be, what it could be...

I think that one of the most devious and demonic attempts of modern culture is to devalue all the most beautiful things that God has created. Eventually, to take away the divine value in the human person, gradually leading us to believe that we are basically only human, and almost no more than any other animal.

Sex is the mere physical union of two bodies, and it can also exist only for pure pleasure and enjoyment; the newborn life in a woman's body is a lump of cells; marriage is an expiring contract; with earthly life everything ends; the bond with a biological mother is not really that important; biology and anatomy count for nothing in the gender of a human person; a person's unconscious body can be killed because that is not life; etc ... take all these observations and transform them into attempts to affirm a culture: the so-called sexual freedom, abortion, divorce, denial of God, surrogate pregnancy, euthanasia ... all these ideologies start from some affirmation that we are somehow less than what God created us to be. In the same way, by stopping at emotionality and not deepening into the human and mystical journey of the will, we are reducing that semi-divine being that is a man - "you made it a little less than the angels" - said St. Paul, to a mere imperfect machine.

Where does the soul reside? Between the sails of emotion, or in the depths of the ocean? We really think that this is how the Lord of the universe and of love created us, people incapable of determination, constancy, consistency, true strength that is that of those who, despite emotional attacks of all kinds, continue to pursue a path which bears fruit? Whose, whatever happens, ultimately rediscovers themselves victorious in love? Because it is to victory that leads the will, not to misery. A kind of heroism. To holiness, to put it in a Christian way.

And this is where true faith begins. Do we want to be victorious in love? Yes. Are we capable of doing it? No. Not without God and His spirit. Similarly, however, without our will God cannot act.

Our "yes" is the key that opens the door of grace. Without it, there can be no grace, there is only the wind of feelings that throws us mercilessly from one side to the other, without ever making us reach the mainland, plant a flag, create something that lasts over time.

The "productivity" of mankind, even from a spiritual point of view, depends on the will. Just as a house cannot be built if the workers do not work every day, so without will, every day and every new day, we do not reach any spiritual goal, and we do not bear fruits that will last. With God, however, and with our will, we can see miracles, accomplish what we would never have believed possible, become saints.

Will is the noblest quality God has given mankind. And whenever you find yourself facing a difficult choice, don't ask yourself: "What makes me feel good?" but ask yourself: “What do I want? Who do I want to be? " And then use the will to make it happen.

The answer to the second question is not necessarily a step that will make you feel good immediately, or not always, but it certainly leads, more than any other path, to the truest happiness, to a "feeling good" far away and very different from a mere sensation of superficial and fleeting gratification. The Resurrection, indeed, is not an emotional state; the Resurrection is a true work of reconstruction and rebirth of the soul. It is a "new thing" that is created, a new creature.

So, do we just want to "feel good" for momentary moments, or do we want to "live resurrected" on earth?
